Hei Hei Familie,It has been a great week here in Oslo. Last Monday we took the mission car and went down to a place called Vesby (30 min away) to the outlets. I ended buying a suit there for a good price and it looks way sick. It's mostly for after the mission but it was about $260. This week we did a lot of service for R a new convert of a little over a week ago. She is way awesome and has completely changed her life around. She wanted to start a completely new life after her baptism including moving into a new apartment. She bought all new furniture from Ikea so we spent a lot of time putting together all her furniture with the other elders. It was a lot of fun and i got a taste of what you guys are going through with the new house ha ha.
I had my last interview with President Johansen on Wednesday and it was amazing. I wrote down all these questions before the interview and then asked them all. I respect my mission president so much and i was very satisfied with his answers. I asked him if it was better to live a simple life even if you have a lot of wealth. He told me it was a personal choice but its important that the worldly things don't take over your life. President Johansen has chosen to live a simple life but has made sure that his kids get the best education. He talked about some fundamental things that he did with his family that created nets so that his children wouldn't fall off. He said as parents you have to set rules because you are competing against the world. He said the world will win unless you set some foundations. He said in his family then he would gather his family around and say something like, "In this family we do this..." it would be church, family home evening, learning a second language, learning a musical instrument, family prayer etc. He said it won't be easy and sometimes the spirit won't be there at family home evening but you can't ever give up and your example to your kids is priceless. He said he never had to tell his kids to go to church because is was just what they did. He told me to take callings in church and visit the temple often with your wife. There comes a time where you can't force your kids to do something and then its up to them but its important that we receive the revelation of when that is. My guess would be around 18 but I'm not sure yet.
In Norway they have this thing called St. Hans Holiday which is the longest day with the sun. It was on Thursday but they don't celebrate until Saturday. On Thursday the sisters, other elders, us and R took a ferry out to an island and did some grilling. It was so much fun and i can't even express in words wow beautiful Norway is. Its just unbelievable! Out in the Oslo Harbor they have about 6-7 pretty big islands and there are people that live on most of them. The one we went to no one lives on but it was sure pretty. On the island they had this huge grass field where you could play soccer or football. They also had beach volleyball courts and a basketball court. We hung out on the beach and i got fried. I'm so red ha ha.
On Saturday for St. Hansaften, Eldste Johnson and I went to a park with a member for dinner and did some grilling there too. It was pretty funny... A the member we were with asked us when the next bus came. We were still cooking hot dogs and such but we ran over to the bus stop to check and found out that the last bus of the day was coming in 3 minutes. We ran back and told him and we just threw all the food in a box, packed our stuff and ran out of there. Once we got on the bus it starting pouring so it was a good things we checked the bus station. It would have been like a two hour walk in the rain! That night it cleared and on St. Hans all the missionaries have permission to stay up until 12 so we hit the town. On St. Hans they light these big bon fires to celebrate so we thought it would be a good idea to just ride the ferries and watch all the bon fires get lit off. It was the best idea ever and the sisters came with us so we had a blast. I got a lot of good pictures that i will send you all.
On Sunday we got a really good turn out with our investigators. We had three people there and we were only expecting one of them to come so it was a miracle. We went and picked up A and took him to church and dropped him off at the young mens and then R and L came as well. Eldste Johnson and I were putting up some language fliers earlier this week and R approached me and said he wanted a Book of Mormon. It was amazing and now he wants to be taught. The Lord is really blessing us right now. L is a half Swedish and half Canadian that came to church on his own. His Father stopped going to church when he was six years old and now he wants to learn more. We have an appointment with him this week as well.
We got a call from the APs earlier this week wanting to know if we could do a favor for them. They wanted us to drive to the airport on Sunday night to pick a missionary and then drive to Hamar and stay the night with him there. This Elder witnessed an argument and someone getting kicked when he was serving in Hamar so the police needed him to testify at his court case. It was today so after he was done with the court case we went and got some really good Kebabs before driving back to the airport. It was a fun day! It was beautiful drive so we were glad we did it.
Well i just got to say that a mission is the greatest thing ever. I love it and I'm having so much fun and the miracles I've seen are incredible. I miss you all a lot but i know that this is where the Lord wants me to be. This work is so rewarding and i love to see the change that gospel does for our lives. This is Christs church and i know that it is true through a confirmation from the Holly Ghost. I love you all and I'll talk to you soon!
Eldste Godfrey
